We have packed and unpacked. Coordinated, scheduled, and organized. And for the first time in almost 9 months we have a place to call our own. Our own sweet little home. A 750ft apartment in Framingham, MA that meets all our needs and is beyond all our expectations. Wow. God Provides.

Thank you to everyone who has kept us in prayer, all the kind emails you have sent encouraging me to keep my hopes up and to not give up. The understanding & love you showed on my most difficult days. And all the generosity that has been poured upon us and our lives to make this transition as easy as possible. Wow. I am richly blessed. I am looking forward to setting up my studio and getting back to work.

The following passage of scripture is on my refrigerator to remind me to not forget what we have gone thru over the past 8 months. Those dark and terrifying days of wandering had purpose.

For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love." - Romans 5:3-5

I hate to say that I have become accustomed to disappointment. Especially recently. I have been trying to keep a happy heart despite several delays in our moving plans. Right now we are living like wanderers. Without the network of family/friends who let us sleep on their air-mattress, couch, and futons -- we would be homeless. We have been fed, clothed, and given a bed - all thanks to the most generous network of Christians. All fulfillments of God's promises. And God knows who you are.

Yet my selfish heart is weighed down with 8 months of temporary after temporary. I miss my husband. I miss our nest. I miss our time. I miss having a day, just a single day, to spend with my beloved. I miss feeling like a wife. Cooking and cleaning and snuggling and enjoying the man God blessed me with. My heart is near to broken. I feel like a widow to a ghost. I am trying - SO HARD - to stay happy and joyful and optimistic.

We were hoping to move in today (today is our 11 year dating anniversary and I was looking forward to cooking our first meal in our own kitchen in 8 months) but there was a delay in preparing the apartment. So we are hoping to move in on Tuesday if there are no other delays. Our friends and family all work on Tuesday - and Brian has an important inspection going on that day. So I will probably be moving everything I can by myself until Tuesday evening. Hoping to have a bed & table in the apartment, and then couches will arrive on the weekend.

I mailed checks to my bank in Oregon last week, and am hoping that they will be deposited in time so that we can write our first rent check. But if there's a delay in that - we might as well postpone everything until Saturday.Brian's first paycheck was delayed a week due to new hire paperwork. It has been a long road to this day of my life.

Finally all our prayers and hopes and dreams have been answered. My husband just got hired as an Aquarist Research Technician at Harvard Medical School. He will be taking care of animals in a genetic research lab. After completing a year long course in Aquarium Science, an unpaid internship, and several months of waiting and wondering...(and me paying the bills for 16+ months) our prayers have been answered above and beyond our wildest dreams and hopes and plans.

Brian begins work on Monday, and today he spoke with HR and handed me a list of benefits so long I started to cry halfway thru and dropped to my knees. Everything is being taken care of. EVERYTHING. God has provided, just as He promised. To Noah, to Abraham, and to every faithful child of His since the beginning of time. His unfailing love is everlasting to everlasting. Like Psalm 23: My cup OVERFLOWS. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me every single day of my life.

Every single day. Even those dark days where I thought my marriage was crumbling and I had nothing to live for. Even those days had purpose.

Where is better to dwell than in the hands of the one True God who created everything and who is the definition of Love. Read the Bible. It is the answer to EVERYTHING. It is the Word of God.

He started working on a new series for his shop tonight, and I photographed a sneak preview so you can see the entire process. Here are some pictures of the shirts he's hand painting tonight. The first one is a Celtic Octopus. Followed by a Sperm whale attacking a giant squid. And an Orca family. Everything is done freehand. Isn't it cool!?

Friendship

Today I spent the afternoon with my friend Lindsey who I've known for 20 years. We took a walk in the backyard with her babies and encouraged each other in our personal hopes and struggles. It's good to have friends who have the same life philosophies that you do. You can share hopes, dreams, and downfalls on a common foundation of love & faith.

Lindsey has a daughter named Linden who is 3 months old and I took some photos in the backyard while we walked.

It was a good, calm day. 2012 is looking hopeful and happy so far!

2012 Resolutions

Yes I am one of those annoying people that actually writes resolutions every year. New Years is my favorite personal holiday. I always wake up January 1st feeling refreshed and free from all the burdens and bad attitudes that I was carrying in the previous year. Most years I have the standard "lose some weight, be healthier, read more Bible" goals. This year I knew exactly what I had to work on before the ball dropped. I've been doing a lot of soul searching and spiritual study about contentment and life and purpose. Since my husband has been applying for jobs all over the USA for months, I feel uprooted and unable to make any plans or goals for myself. I'm naturally goal-oriented and not being able to plan more than a month in advance has forced me to live day by day and focus on the short term. Which has helped me grow in many ways. And brought to light some things I need to work on this year.

So here is my 2012 resolutions in no particular order:
Be content with what I have.
Stop comparing my life to others.
Grow a more active faith.
Love recklessly and live wisely.
Focus on spiritual ambitions.
Give up goals that only fuel my selfish pride.
Invest my joy into spiritual things that wont let me down.
Be more optimistic.
Write a book.
Grow my hair long again.
Lose 10 pounds.

I'm writing a book! A publishing company contacted me to write a book about yarn, and so I am. But I need your help to make it amazing. Build your own Photography Lightbox for $37

After spending too many days bemoaning early nights and frozen fingers while taking outdoor photos - I decided it was time to make a lightbox. I looked for different ideas online and tweaked the end result to meet my needs. It was so simple to make and works so well - I figure I'd show & tell so you can make one too:

For the box I purchased a Large Plastic Storage Bin from Target for $13. It's about 24x14x16. I wanted something really wide for doing several skeins of yarn all lined up, and tall for large bobbins. You may not need as large of a bin if you are shooting something smaller (like jewelry or beads). The clear bin works as a great light diffuser and you can store all the lights & backdrops in it when not in use.

For light I purchased 3 clip-on office lamps from Target for $6 each. I have another office lamp in front of the light box that I already had. That is optional. If you are using a smaller box you might not need a light in front. My box is big so I supplemented a lamp in front for a cleaner look.

The light bulbs in the lamps are 60 Watt and cost $2 for 4 bulbs.

The white background is a roll of craft foam I purchased at Michaels with a 50% off coupon. It is normally $8 but I got it for $4. The roll is 36x60 inches. I cut the 36" to 24" to fit into the plastic bin, and taped it to the interior top of the box with packing tape. Just in case it gets dirty, I'll be able to roll it and use different sections back & front. I like that it is a matte finish (no glare or shine in my photos) and it won't bend permanently like paper. It also stores easily. If you're using a smaller box you can also use white posterboard for your backdrop. Or a smaller piece of craft foam. I've seen some fiber artists use cute scrapbook paper as the backdrop in their lightboxes with charming results.

And that's about it.

Plastic Bin = $13 (you can save $ by buying a smaller one)
Foam Backdrop = $4 (use a 50% off coupon)
3 Lamps = $18 (check out a thrift store too!)
Lightbulbs = $2
TOTAL COST = $37

Picked up 7 more Black and White Lincoln Fleeces today. Some of them have an 8+ inch staple! A couple of them have this gorgeous charcoal grey/brown mix in some of the locks which makes them look almost an eggplant rasberry purple color. I'll be sorting these locks and selling them on my website in the next couple days.

That brings the total fleeces I have to wash up to 11. Or 12? I can't remember... I wish the water got hot enough to wash wool in the house we're temporarily staying in now. The water only gets up to 120 degrees and I need 140 degrees to wash wool. It's frustrating. I'm going to see how much it would cost to have a technician come out and turn up the hot water heater (it has to be turned up from the inside apparently) and what the effect on the hot water bill will be. Oy. I hate to be a burden on other people...

That and when we took in our car today for an oil change we found out we need new tires and new brakes. They gave us an estimate of about $1000. So here's hoping I can sort thru 12 fleeces, turn the hot water heater up, wash 40 pounds of wool, photograph it, and add it to the shop before it begins to snow or our brakes start squealing.

Nothing like a big bill to kick me in the pants and get me working double-time to make ends meet.

Today is one of those days I am glad we don't celebrate Christmas in a big expensive way. Forgive me for not counting my blessings. I'm just trying hard to keep my chin up. It's been over 12 months since my husband had a job. For the past 6 months we've been sharing a house with another family. We're supposed to find out about a potential job opening in Boston by the end of this month. He's applied to 30+ other places. He's been offered two jobs for $10/hour and we can't afford that with his student loan payments (due in February for 10 years...)

Sometimes all I can do is cry. And then wipe my tears away, stop feeling sorry for myself, and get back to work.

More Thoughts on Knitting with Art Yarn

Funny I just posted about this last week, but I wanted to share some more words on the subject from a fellow spinning friend of mine.

I think an important thing not to miss...is that this conversation started because knitters were having trouble getting (post-functionalist) yarn to work appropriately in their projects. I think the disagreement between people is coming from the question of: who's responsibility is it to define what the yarn's function is. Some believe the spinner should present their yarn and state what it was made to do (ie: a knitting yarn, a warp yarn, an art piece.).

I believe the onus is on the buyer to look at the yarn and be able to determine an appropriate project to use it for. This puts more work on the buyer, but ultimately it will make that person also more creative. They have to take the yarn into account, not just plug it in. They have to interact and react to the yarn as they use it. This should not be cause for dismay but rather a joyful, challenging experience that will make you a better creator.

This benefits everyone.

The craft as a whole will be better if more people lose their fear of stepping outside of the pattern. it's not always easy to let go in this way. but once people realize that the scarf won't burst into flames if you add a few stitches to make up for a thin part in the yarn, they will be empowered to become their own designer. not just a knitter/crocheter/etc.going through someone else's steps.

Knitting with Art Yarn

Knitting handspun art yarn is like creative therapy. Each stitch has a different personality that you have to work with - like your friends and family. You never know what the next yard will bring - like your life. The "unexpected" is what makes it beautiful.

This is why I keep all my patterns simple. Knitters often live in a world where a skein of monochromatic commercially spun worsted weight 4-ply wool yarn is bent to their will with markers, holders, counters, and pages and pages of patterns.

Art yarn lives outside of this world. When you knit with art yarn - allow the yarn to speak for itself. To guide you thru a wonderful creative journey. To show you: rules can be broken and it will still be beautiful. If a thick slub of wool widens your gauge too much, knit a couple stitches together in the next row to keep your knit square. You may start with 25 stitches, and end with 23. Who is going to know?

Work with the yarn, not against it. Allow the yarn to breathe and take the lead. You may start knitting a fingerless mitten, and love it so much that you want to see it year-round...and end up with a pillow. "Think outside the gauge."

Many spinners see their yarns as a finished work of art. Don't over-design the beauty of someone else's art by using a complicated pattern. Keep it simple.

EASIEST Handknit Fingerless Mitts Pattern EVER

This is how all patterns should be written, in my most humble opinion...

Knit a 7x7 square in garter stitch.
Or stockinette if you want to.
Any yarn. Any needles.

Are you getting nervous? Okay fine. I cast on 25 stitches on size 7 needles with thick and thin chunky/worsted handspun yarn. Now don't be afraid to go 6.5 x 6.5 if you have smaller hands. Or 8x8 if you have larger hands.

Breathe. Let it go.

* Knit a square.
Sew up the seam.
Leave a hole in the seam for the thumb to poke thru.

Repeat from * to complete 2nd mitt.

Voila. Fingerless mitts. Also known as "texting mittens". No k2togppkssokfwip drama. Just a square, folded in half, sewn, and BAM. Your fingers look fabulous and cozy in about an hour.

"Vinespun" Art Yarn Swag

My father in law and I walked thru the woods this morning looking for pieces of aromatic cedar to make into fiber studio mobiles. I found the neatest vines growing around the dead cedar branches, and I took a couple cuttings home to make into art yarn swags. I loved how the vines looked like 3 and 4-ply yarns that the trees had spun. So inspiring! When I got home I wrapped my yarn around one of the vine cuttings and hung it over my in-laws couch.

Carding Marathon Results

I spent the past 9 days carding all the wool in my stash (Lincoln, Romney, Navajo-Churro, Border Leicester, Silk, Bamboo, Angelina, Raw Cashmere, Vintage Yarn scraps, and countless random bits and pieces) into art batts for your spinning pleasure this winter. My "theme" is Towns of Connecticut. I have been so inspired by the history and architecture in New England this winter. New "Cozy Mason" Knitting Project Idea on Ravelry

I'm working on a series of Art Yarn "Project Ideas" (otherwise known as "patterns" but I am not writing them out line by line because every art yarn is unique) for Ravelry.

This one is for a Mazon Jar cover. I was inspired by a jar cover I saw online. But since I don't like to decipher and follow knitting patterns - I just made a simple stockinette tube with some of my art yarn on size 11 needles to cover a quart sized jar. One of my favorite elements of knitting with art yarn is letting the color/texture do all the talking. A true art yarn doesn't need fancy knit or crochet patterns to make it shine. Less is More.

A quick art yarn project! Grab a skein of Ashley's bulky yarn, a pair of size 50 needles, and 2 hrs and you have a great pillow. I wove in sari silk for texture. It took me longer to sew it than to knit it! Using only 30 yds! I cast on 8 st on size 50 s. Knit 4 rows. Row 5 I did yarn overs every stitch. Knit 4 more rows. Bind off. This, sllightly stretched, fit my 12 x 16 pillow form.

Fun-Raiser for Fiber Camp!

So despite my efforts, I haven't been able to raise the funds needed to purchase a plane ticket from Boston to California to attend the Camp Pluckyfluff Barn Raising event Labor Day weekend. It's a 5-day fiber art camp where many talented spinners and fiber artists will gather to share their talents and skills with each other. There will be a grand opening of the new fiber studio, classes, and games to play.

I contributed wool to the fundraiser to fund the new studio, purchased a piece of art to help fund the project, and helped invent some of the games the spinners will play - but now I have no funds to buy a plane ticket and pay for gas/food. Right now we are living off half of what I hoped to make each month and our savings. My husband has been a full time student for a year so it's been all up to me to make ends meet.

I want to create a documentary interviewing all these spinners about their creative inspiration, recommendations for new spinners, favorite yarns they ever spun, and how they found their niche in the fiber art world. I want to share this wonderful weekend with everyone who can't attend. So I'm hoping to raise enough money in the next week or so to purchase a plane ticket while they are still under $500.

Drop Spindling Lessons

I am working on a series of art yarn drop spindling tutorials for YouTube. The basic lessons (single ply, plying) will be free, and intermediate techniques will be the same price as the wheel tutorials in my shop. I will be covering many more techniques using a drop spindle because they're all a bit different than using a wheel.

Here's a video I made today while I was warming up to the custom drop spindle my friend Adele made for me. She makes art yarn spindles for $25 each. They are heavier than the other spindles on the market and have plenty of torque to spin thru bulkier yarns.

I already completed the first tutorial for spinning upcycled art yarn on a drop spindle. Here's a photo of the gorgeous yarn I created from 4 commercial cones of yarn. Yarn cones are usually super cheap at thrift stores - and upcycling is an awesome way to transform a super fine yarn into a bulkier yarn for a quick & easy knit or crochet project!

Now back to tagging and labeling the rest of my mohair and silk tops so I can begin a very long photography day and upload all 55 pounds of tops (merino, silk, mohair) to the shop. Then I have another 44 pounds of wool locks (white border leicester and grey lincoln) to wash & dye. Then all shop updates will be complete for the summer. I can't believe how much work I'm getting done thru these 90-degree days.

Did I mention we don't have air conditioning? My tan is awesome. :)

I stopped by a charming yarn shoppe today in Norfolk, MA. It's run by Cheryl and Ellen, and they are artisan pattern designers on Ravelry. They love supporting local fiber artists and featuring unique yarns in their shop. I brought my bag of handspun goodies for them to pick thru and we had a great time matching up my yarns with other commercial yarns to brainstorm unique knits. Cheryl and Ellen were so excited about my yarns - they purchased several to break into smaller skeins and include in their patterns and sell in their shop!

Safe & Sound!

Just letting everyone know we arrived in Bellingham, MA safe & sound! I've been busy getting organized, unpacked, and adjusted to the new routine & time zone. My husband and I both got sick from all the altitude & temperature changes during the trip. So we're still recovering from that. But we are soaking in the warm days and enjoying being so close to his family and spending time with our niece & nephew. I've been doing a lot of carding and will be picking up more fleeces after July 10th to wash and dye. I don't really have access to a computer like I did in Oregon. I'm hoping to have over 100 batts carded up and ready for sale in the shop by July 10th. Until then, check out the video I made of our cross-country trek:

The 25% off sale in my shop ends tomorrow (coupon code JUNE678) with only 2 mystery wool tops left, 4 merino wool tops, 3 art batts, 15 lots of dyed alpaca, 6 bags of wool locks, and lots of mohair. Plus other novelty items like hair accessories, necklaces, sun catchers, and felted soaps.

I will be closing my shop the evening of June 10th to pack and prepare for our cross-country move. I won't be able to re-open until we hit our destination (Bellingham, MA) sometime around June 22nd.

Once I re-open I will be washing luxury Border Leicester locks & Lincoln locks from my favorite farms. And will be dyeing merino top, silk top, and mohair top. I also have tussah silk, bamboo, and firestar I want to introduce to my shop as well. I'm really excited to get into more specialty fibers this summer.

Everything I've been selling for the past 5 months I purchased a ginormous lot of mystery wool tops from a local fiber artist who passed away last July (see photo). But now that all that wool is gone (I can't believe it) I am focusing more on finding the highest quality wool for the best price I can afford. So my prices will be raised a little bit come summer. But I will make sure to keep my bottom dollar as low as possible so that everything your purchase is still competitively priced in the fiber art market.

Thanks to everyone for your business and repeat business and positive feedback and support. Without you I wouldn't have been able to quit my day job, stay home, get healthy, and support my husband thru his last term of school. Without you I wouldn't be able to join him in Boston this summer. So I just want to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who has cheered me on.

And the Sale Begins!!

Wow. I am so overwhelmed and thankful for everyone who stopped by my shop today and used the 25% off coupon code (JUNE678). I sold almost $800 today and am feeling such peace and relief knowing I will be able to fit everything into my car for our cross-country trip in 1 week. With the money I've raised - I will be able to invest in prime curly wools from my favorite suppliers.

I learned a lesson this week. A lesson I keep telling others but somehow forgot in one of those crazy wool crazed moments. I recently purchased 84 pounds of Border Leicester from a local farm. And after picking thru it, I was only able to salvage about 40 pounds. One entire fleece was matted (I gave it to a friend for free to make into a faux skeepskin) and the rest was just too dirty to deal with. I listed what I had left in my shop and within 5 hours the entire lot was gone. After all the driving and skirting and weighing and bagging - I earned a mere $40 on the entire thing. I made so little because half the wool was filthy. It was my fault. I was too excited and wasn't thinking straight. The farm told me they were selling it cheap because of the staple length. But the staple length looked just fine to me (most of it over 4"). I think they were selling it because of the poo/matted bits. It was just really disappointing. But I can't hold it against the farm. I bought it without thinking it might be less than I expected.

So I learned my lesson. Don't cheat on my wool resources to save some money. I learned how to spin in New England and no matter where I go - I will always buy my wools from there. I am so excited to visit my favorite farms in Connecticut & Rhode Island at the end of this month. I have always been impressed with New England wools. No more "hunt and peck" for the best deals trying to pinch pennies on a college student budget. I'm sticking with my faithful & true resources who haven't let me down in 8 years.

Small Business Consulting

One direction I want to go into with my at home business is small business consulting. I want to help stay at home moms and wives help their families by earning a little $$$ on the side for the emergency fund or family entertainment. Right now I am putting my husband thru school while working from home doing something I love and am passionate about. And I couldn't be happier. Destash Sale

I can either spend 2 entire days photographing, weighing, bagging, and listing 30 separate destash lots on my website and then leave what doesn't sell at my house over the summer to gather dust...while I'm also packing, cleaning, organizing...

I hate that "hoarding" feeling when my stash gets too big.

My Cousin's Wedding

I'm back!! I was gone since last Thursday spending time with my family before moving cross-country for the summer (although I'll be back in the fall). Mom and I went to an auction on Friday and yard sailing on Saturday where I picked up an antique cedar trunk for $10. Then we went to Poulsbo, Washington to my cousin's wedding on Sunday and a memorial service for the veterans that evening. On Monday we went to the Seattle Folk Festival. It was awesome. Great music, amazing vendors, delicious food... We got home at 2:00am and I didn't get back to my house until late Tuesday night. But it was one of those wonderful trips I'll remember forever. I'm waiting for my mom to upload the video of the Folk Festival. Until then here are some highlights from my cousin's wedding. I wasn't the main photographer, but I have photographed weddings before so I did some candid portraits as their wedding gift.

I think it was about 1 week ago I was reviewing my business plan and looked into ideas for being more self-sustaining and self-supporting. Between reviewing Google Analytics, CSS programming tutorials, graphic design, a new logo, 2 new domain names, a new shop - I feel like a whole new business. I feel lighter, prettier, and happier. I am excited about what will happen next.

Combine all that change with the most fun photoshoot ever. Helping a friend open her new fiber shop Punk and Sparkle Fibers (you can get 10% off your order if you use the code ASHLEY). Organizing a Online Fiber Community Supersale for June 6-7-8. Answering emails. It's just been one of those moments where all I can say is "Wow."

I may not have a flock of sheep - but now I have a little lamb to play in my shop. My friend Cliff made this logo as well, but I tweeked it a little bit to match what was in my head. I find it's very difficult to make a sheep look cute sometimes. Just look at all the "sheep logos" on Google Images. Baaaa-Humbug.

Big Plans!

I have so much to do this weekend.

I finished my website! My friend Cliff designed my new logo & banner. I tweeked it a bit to make it softer. I wanted it to look like it was covered in mohair. I could cover everything in mohair, I tell ya.

I've got about 5 or 6 girls coming to my house on Saturday for a photoshoot for my friend Heather's awesome freeform crochet hat shop Girl With a Hook. The picture is of me and Heather trying on a couple of Ana Voog's hats. She was a freeform crochet artist that inspired Lexi to start spinning and me to start spinning and Heather to spin and freeform crochet. Maybe we'll try to do a video of the photoshoot at the same time so you can see me at work behind the camera. That would be hilarious. I'm styling the girls and we're doing some woodsy natural pictures and then some beach pictures. I'm hoping the ocean isn't too cold so we can get some wave shots. :) Will post the photoshoot this weekend on my Flickr.

Besides that, I'm trying to teach myself CSS so that I can program my new Big Cartel shop. Sometimes it pays to be a computer geek. I have a new fancy domain name for it all setup. And I bought a spiff looking template. But I just need to sit down and figure out how to get it to look swanky. Oh, and I've decided that Swank is the new Fab. So there you go.

And then there's custom orders & shipments to process. And ceramics class 4 times a week. I made myself a series of yarn hangers that spell "n-e-a-u-v-e-a-u" for my yarns to dry on. They're super cute. I can't wait to have a real studio to hang them in.

And getting everything ready to pack & drive cross-country in June. Crazy.

The NEW Neauveau!

After a lot of research and website programming and switching things up - I am so happy with the new layout of my website - which is now an actively working blog! I hope this will be easier for you to follow. Now I can add new classes & events in just a couple clicks instead of programming HTML across the entire page. I can also host giveaways here too! I love it. Thanks for your patience during our remodel - and if anything doesn't work - please send me an email.

If you hadn't noticed, I had to get a new domain name (handspunartyarn.com) in order to make the process easier. If I just used neauveau.com - then I would have broken every single neauveau link made since 2004. Including all the links to the Recycled Yarn Tutorial (of which I get about 3000 visitors a month). So I ended up forwarding all my neauveau pages to this domain. But I will still be using neauveau.com as my website on all my marketing. :)

Next Project: I'll be opening a new shop soon! I am switching from ETSY (my fees there are over $100 per month and I cannot afford that. I would rather move my shop than raise my prices) to Big Cartel. So hopefully all that new formatting will be done by the end of this month. I'm excited to see how my new shop looks. :) I will still keep a few things on ETSY - but I cannot afford to spend over $100 per month on fees when I can have a prettier shop for a flat $30 per month.
