Upcycled Art Yarn Mobile

Pin It Now!

My friend April Starr runs a very cute blog called The Flourishing Abode.  She has tutorials and DIY projects from upcycled thrift store finds.  I loved the little wooden hangers she uses to display her typography prints - and when I saw a couple at the thrift store the other day I picked them up for $1.99 each.

I took some clay pendants that I made in pottery class last year, but you can also use vintage buttons or knit a swatch from your art yarn and hang it using this style of hanger.  You could also try making pendants with air-dry clay.  Or sew scrappy letters and hang it in a baby room so it spells their name.  Or tie feathers to the ends.  The possibilities are endless!
After I took the clay pendants, I tied them to art yarn with a secure knot thru a hole I made in the pendant, and a knot at the top of the yarn.  I opened the hanger and placed the knot above the wood and lined the yarns in the order I thought they looked best.  Then I closed the hanger so that the knots kept the yarn from falling thru (but the hanger itself is pretty tight so that keeps it secure as well).  Then I hung it on a wall.

Make a windchime by plying your yarn with tiny bells and hanging in an open window!

Love this, I'd lie to try making one for newly expected grandsons room! Maybe I can find little brightly colored pottery or glass birds? Hmmmm, here we go again!!!
